Step 01: Document Setup

After opening the Corel Draw X5 program, select the New Icon from the Standard Bar.

The create a New Document Window appears.

Here you can set the document's Dimensions, Rendering Resolution, Color Settings and more.

Click the down arrow next to Size and select Letter from the list.

For the purpose of the tutorial, Primary Color Mode is set to RGB.

Notice also that Portrait Orientation is set by Default.

Click OK.


Step 02: Create Rectangle

Next you'll need to draw a Rectangle. Select the Rectangle Tool from the Toolbox.

From the pop out menu select Rectangle.

Drag and draw a Rectangle on the page.

The Rectangle will be surrounded by Stretching & Scaling Handles.


Step 03: Set Object Size

Using the Property Bar, you can set exact dimensions for the Rectangle.

Set Object Size Width to 4.15" and Object Size Height to 2.6". Hit Enter. The Rectangle's Size will change.

Using the Pick Tool from the Toolbox, select the Rectangle and move to the Top Left corner of the page.


Step 04: Create Duplicates

Select your Ctrl and D Keys together 3 Times to create 3 Duplicates.

Each will be placed behind the Original.

Another way to create Duplicates is to go to the Menu Bar and select Edit > Duplicate.

You will have to do this action 3 times however, as each time a Duplicate is created, the Menu will close.

Line the Duplicates below the Original Rectangle.

Then drag the Pick Tool over all 4 Rectangles and create 1 Duplicate.

Drag to the right of the Page, so that it's now filled with 8 Rectangles.

Step 05: Fill & Stroke Colors

Now you can set the Fill & Stroke Colors for each Rectangle. For this version of the Computer Classes Flyer Tutorial, we will use Black and Grays.

Select the 1st Rectangle with the Pick Tool, then move your cursor over the Color Black.

Select Black to set the Fill Color. Then right click over the same Black Color to set the Stroke of the Rectangle.

When you hold your cursor over a Color on the Color Palette, you will see the RGB Values of the Color.

The Color Values for the remaining Rectangles are:
Rectangle 2 - R 230 G 230 B 230
Rectangle 3 - R 204 G 204 B 204
Rectangle 4 - R 77 G 77 B 77
Rectangle 5 - R 128 G 128 B 128
Rectangle 6 - R 153 G 153 B 153
Rectangle 7 - R 230 G 230 B 230
Rectangle 8 - R 51 G 51 B 51

Now you should have the Colored Rectangle Layer.

Next, draw another Rectangle on the Page setting its Dimensions to Width 7.5" and Height 10".

Using your Arrow Keys on the keyboard, move this new Rectangle to the Center of the Page.

Set this Rectangle's Fill & Stroke to White.

Now you are ready to insert an Image into the Flyer.



Step 06: Royalty Free Clip Art

The Public Domain Vector Clip Art for this Computer Classes Flyer was downloaded from the Open Clip Art Library.

The Clip Art is called Cartoon Computer and Desktop by DTRave.

Once the image has been downloaded, you will need to place it into the flyer.


Step 07: Import Image

To Import the Image go up to the Menu Bar and select File > Import.

This opens the Import Window where you will browse to locate your file. Select it and click Import.

The Image Name & its Dimensions appear next to the cursor. Click where you wish to place the Image.

The Image will be larger than the page. To Resize the Image you can move the Scaling and Stretching Handles.

If you want to use more precise dimensions, on the Property Bar, set Width to 4.3" and Height to 3.4".

Then move the Image into a good spot on the Flyer.

You'll probably make adjustments to this later, so don't worry too much over it right now.
