Step 01: Document Setup
Upon opening Corel Draw X8, you will be greeted with a Welcome Screen.
Select New Document. This opens the Create a New Document Window.
Here, make sure that the Settings are set to Size Letter. Let's work with CMYK Colors instead of RGB this time. Create OK to create your Blank Document.
Let's begin creating this Christmas Toy Drive Flyer.
Step 02: Convert to Curves
Creating the Background for this Flyer will be a bit more complicated than some of the easier tutorials we have done with Corel Draw (Easter Egg Hunt Flyer, Florist Flyer, Fall Fest Flyer, etc).
The result will be worth all of the effort.
To the Left of the Screen you will see the Toolbox.
Select the Rectangle Tool.
While holding down your mouse button, drag and draw a Rectangle on the Page. Notice the 8 Black Handles around the Shape.
The 4 Handles in each corner are for Scaling the Shape. The 4 Remaining Handles are for Stretching the Shape.
From the Object Menu, select Convert to Curves.
Step 03: Add & Delete Nodes
Next, select the Shape Tool from the Toolbox. This Tool allows you to Edit an Object or Text by Manipulating its Nodes.
Notice the Tiny Nodes at the 4 Corners of the Rectangle.
Select the Top Right Node. The selected Node will have a Blue Filled Square over it.
From the Property Bar, click the Add Nodes Icon to add a Node to the Center of the Line Segment that comes before the Node.
A Node will be added to the Center of this Line Segment.
Click in any White Area to deselect both Nodes.
Then while holding down the Ctrl Key, select the 2 Outer Nodes.
On the Property Bar, select theDelete Nodes Icon.
The resulting Shape is a Triangle.
Step 04: Set Object Size
Select the Pick Tool from the Toolbox.
Notice the Property Bar has changed.
Set the Object Size to Width 1.5 Inches and Height to 4.75 Inches, and hit your Enter Key.
Drag the Triangle to the bottom of the Page.
Step 05: Create Duplicates
We need to have 12 of these Shapes. So let's make 11 Duplicates of the Original Shape. With the Triangle selected, while holding down the Ctrl Key on your keyboard, hit the D Key as well.
This brings up the Duplicate Offset Window.
You can leave the Default Settings and click OK.
Your Duplicate will be added to the Page.
Now create 10 more Duplicates by hitting these 2 Keys 10 Times.
Next we'll move these Duplicates into position on the Flyer.
Step 06: Free Rotate Shape
After selecting a chosen Shape with the Pick Tool, click over the Shape again to change the Resizing Handles to Rotation Handles.
Move your cursor over one of the Corner Handles, and with your mouse button down, drag to the Left or Right to Rotate the Top of the Triangle to the Center of the Flyer.
Proceed to do this for all of the other Shapes until they have all formed a Circular Pattern on the Page. It does look messy, but we will make adjustments.
Step 07: Adjust Nodes
Click the Shape Tool and select the Triangle in the upper Left corner of the Flyer. Select a Node and drag it to the edge of the Page which moves the Shape's Line Segment.
Use the Guides to align the Lines to the Page Border. You can also use your Arrow Keys to Drag a Selected Node.
Select the Node on the Right of this Shape and Add a New Node, which Adds the Node to the Center of this Line Segment. Click in any White Area to Deselect the Node.
Next select the Center Node and drag it to the corner of the Page.
Repeat this for the remaining Corners of the Flyer.
Proceed to make changes to the other Shapes, Free Rotating if necessary.
Now you should have Shapes that somewhat resemble this.
