Step 01: Document Setup

Upon opening Inkscape, locate the Menu Bar.

Select File > Document Properties.

This will open up the Document Properties Window.

You will notice tabs for Page, Guides, Grids, Snap, Color Management, and Scripting.

On the Page Tab where the Default Units is set to px, select the Down Arrow and choose in for Inches from the drop down window.

In the Page Size section select US Letter for
8.5" x 11".

Orientation will be set to Portrait by Default.

To close the window, simply click on the x in the upper right hand corner.

Now you can move on to creating your document.


Step 02: Create Rectangle

The first thing that you will add to this Flyer will be a Rectangle. Go to the Tool Bar and select the Rectangle Tool. Notice that this will change the Tool Properties Bar, which is located above the Flyer/Canvas.

You'll see that the Width and Height boxes are grayed out. Draw a Rectangle at the bottom of the page.

Once this is done, the Width and Height boxes will change to allow you to edit the Rectangle Dimensions.

On the Tool Properties Bar, the last box allows you to change the measurement type. Here it is set to px for Pixels. When you select the down arrow a drop down menu will appear that has different measurement types to choose from.

Choose in for Inches.

Then go over to the Width Box and enter "8.5" in, and set the Height Box to "1.7" in.


Step 03: Use Nodes to Create A Hill

Using the Select Tool move the Rectangle to the bottom of the page. With the Rectangle still selected go to the Toolbox on the left of the screen and select the Edit Paths by Nodes Icon.

The 8 Black Arrows will be replaced by 2 Squares and 1 Circle.

Proceed to the Menu Bar and select Path > Object to Path.

The Rectangle will then be surrounded by 4 Gray Squares called Cusp Nodes, one at each corner.

While holding the mouse button down, drag it over the 2 Top Nodes and release. These 2 nodes will change from Gray to Blue.

Go up to the Tool Control Bar and select the Insert New Nodes into Selected Segments Icon, the first icon in the bar.

Notice a 3rd Node will be added in the Middle of the 2 Top Nodes.

Click on the New Node to select it only and Drag upwards 1/2 inch.

Go back to the Tools Control Bar and click on the Make Selected Nodes Auto-Smooth Icon.

Drag the Top Left Node downward about 1/2 inch.

Bring the Middle Node downward until the Right Side Border lines up with Rectangle Fill Color.

So now we have created our hill using Paths and Nodes. Let's now make it green.



Step 04: Set Fill and Stroke Color

I've listed 3 ways that you can change the Fill and Stroke Color for the object, the shortest way, the short way and the longest way. Select which one works best for you.

Shortest way: To set the color use the Color Palette on the bottom of the screen.

Drag the Scroll Bar to the Right until you come to a Block of Green. Move the mouse over the Color #AAD400 and select it to set the shape's Fill. While holding down the Shift Key click again to set the Stroke to the same color.

You should now have a green hill.



Short way: To set the color another way, Right Click over Color #AAD400 to reveal a menu.

Select Set Fill - the menu will disappear.

Right click again and select Set Stroke.

You should now have a green hill.





Longest way: Proceed to the Commands Bar and select the Fill and Stroke Icon.

This opens the Fill and Stroke Window.

The Fill Tab will be active. Select the Flat Color Icon (the second icon in the Fill Tab).

This will show the Flat Color Options with Tabs for RGB, HSL, CMYK & Wheel.

Under RGB, set R to 170, G to 212, and B to 0 by entering the desired number or using the up and down arrows to change the visible figures.

Then click on the Stroke Paint Tab and enter the same numbers.

The color will change as you move through each box.

You should now have a green hill.


Step 05: Create Rectangle Layers

Go back to the Rectangle Tool to draw a Rectangle with the following dimensions - Height: 2.58 in and Width 2.43 in.

Select the Rectangle with the Select Tool.

Create 2 Duplicates of this Rectangle by hitting the Ctrl and D Keys twice.

Both rectangles will be behind the original.

Select each Rectangle and move it away from the others.



Step 06: Set Rectangle Fill and Stroke Color

While holding down your mouse button, drag it over all 3 Rectangles to select them.

We will change the Stroke Width and Fill of all 3 Rectangles at the same time, avoiding the redundancy of doing each one separately.

Go down to the Fill and Stroke area in the bottom left of the screen.

Move the mouse over the 2 colors and double click to open the Fill and Stroke Window.

Select the Stroke Style Tab.

Set Width to 3.75 px and hit Enter.

You won't notice a change if both colors are set the same.

Next go to the Stroke Paint Tab.

Set RGBA to 255 each and hit Enter.

Deselect the Rectangles by clicking anywhere on a white area of the screen.

Select Rectangle 1 and go to the Fill Tab.

Set R to 170, G to 212, and B to 0.

Select Rectangle 2.

Set R to 255, G to 0, and B to 0.

Rectangle 3 stays with the Black Fill.


Step 07: Apply Drop Shadow to Rectangles

Reselect all 3 Rectangles again to apply a Drop Shadow.

Go to the Menu Bar and select Filters > Shadows and Glows > Drop Shadow.

This will open the Drop Shadow Window.

Enter the following settings:
Blur Radius 2
Opacity 60
Horizontal Offset -5
Vertical Offset 5
.

Then click Apply.

Now the Rectangles are ready for Rotation.


Step 08: Rotate Rectangles

Go to the Menu Bar and select Object > Transform.

This will open the Transform Window which has five tabs, namely Move, Scale, Rotate, Skew, and Matrix.




Select the Rotate Tab.

Select the Red Rectangle.

Type 20 degrees in the Rotate Tab.

Hit Apply.

This will Rotate the Red Rectangle in a Counterclockwise direction.

Next select the Black Rectangle.

Type -20 degrees in the Rotate Tab.

Hit Apply.

This will Rotate the Black Rectangle in a Clockwise direction.
